Let's be honest, giving feedback or talking about our feelings can be really tough. If we haven't had much experience navigating conflict, speaking up or sharing our emotions with others it can be a minefield... until i-statements! 

 

I-statements are simply statements that describe our own experience without using blame, assumptions or defensiveness. The aim, when delivered effectively, is to help someone understand our point of view and resolve problems quicker. It is a skill that people of all ages can benefit from continued practice.

 

This tool can be used individually or in groups, in therapy, at home and in the classroom. Add a more engaging element by the guidelines and examples in role plays to get a feel for using them.
